Progress on BROKEN III.
Probably 3 or 4 days left to go. Now is the time to start thinking about what I will be doing next. One sure way to fall into that artist's block is to finish a piece and not have the next painting in mind.

There was a lot of detailing done today. It's a slow process because I use mostly a #6 round brush...that's small for this size paper. Most of the objects can be picked out at this time, but there is still much to do. I was hoping to complete this in time to enter the first Regional juried Exhibition for West Michigan (Gallery Uptown in Grand Haven) but that's not going to happen. The entries are due the last week of January. I doubt that it will be framed and ready to hang by then.
Your comments are always welcome.

Progress on the painting "Broken III"
Now you can see more of the elements included in this piece. Everything is broken...the Flow-Blue Bowl, the eggs, the Crayons, the cup, even the old quilt on which everything is placed. They all refer to the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi, which refers to how we appreciate beauty. Wabi means something like simplicity, and Sabi refers to the passage of time. The two words together is a concept that beauty is found in imperfect things in life. much of what I paint shows a reference to Wabi-Sabi.

Another day...well, half of a day. There were a few appointments to take care of earlier.

As you can see, I am now painting the Flo-Blue bowl which the broken cup pieces are in. I'm using lots of blues for the bowl. It's color is so beautifully deep! LOVE the color blue. Lots of details to capture. I am also beginning to lay in some of the background colors now.

If you have any questions about how I am getting certain effects, just write a comment.

Started a new painting yesterday morning...BROKEN III. It took several hours just to get it drawn onto the paper. Had to start twice because I didn't graph it out the first time and proportions were going off. Finally the painting process...for now, is going well. The image above is what was accomplished yesterday. The image below is what has been done this morning.
In order to get the details of the broken Blue Willow tea cup, I used a quill pen, but instead of using ink with the pen, I simply dropped small puddles of watercolor onto it's tip and used that color for the details. I started doing this several years ago, back in the early 1990s, when I did a series of folded quilt paintings. I used it again in the vintage toys and comic series.

Doing detailed watercolors takes a lot of time, but knowing simple techniques makes it a little easier.
