Many students think that as a professional artist creates, everything goes well. Here is visual proof that’s not the case.
As a painting progresses it takes on a life of its own. What is happening within the artist’s life attaches itself to that work. Life duties…family, friends, health, church commitments, community commitments….all of these activities effect what goes onto the paper. I’ve had a lot of ‘activity’ these past few weeks.

I have yet to create a painting that I am fully satisfied with, this one especially. Its not what I had in mind in the beginning. What would I do if I ever did create the perfect painting…never try again?

Just wanted to give a small insight into the life of an artist.

Colorfully,
Sandy

Parrot and Pears, watercolor

When looking for objects to use in my watercolors, I’m always looking for something different or unexpected. Many times the vessels holding objects are unusual. That practice is carried on with this painting.
The most unexpected element is the cast-iron parrot. It belongs to my husband who has had it for more than 60 years. It’s a vintage can opener.

The wall paper is a small section of a William Morris design which I’ve had for several years. It’s been used in a few other paintings over the years.

The dragon bowl was a gift from my son, purchased while in the Far East. It too has been used several times.

And finally, the Damask napkin belonged to my mother-in-law. You have seen it in many paintings.
All these elements are my cast of characters that keep reappearing in my work. The cast is large. The fun is to find new situations where different characters can play together to create new paintings.
Colorfully yours, Sandy

On the last day of February I completed this watercolor, SPRINKLES ON TOP.
While at the market, I saw these fancy donuts and couldn't resist the urge to buy them...not to eat, but to paint. I'm not a fan of donuts or cakes. The raspberries however, were delicious!

FRESH EGGS, Watercolor, 17” x 15”
You have seen this vintage toy truck used in many other paintings. He has been one of my favorite actors among the many objects used in my still life paintings.
Here , it holds a bird nest which was found in one of my lilac bushes. The builder of the nest had raised its brood and flown south for the winter.
As I was preparing an egg dish, it occurred to me that they could make an interesting contrast in size and color, if placed in the nest.
Colorfully yours,
Sandy

Blessings have fallen on me! BROKEN II was accepted into the regional Winter Art Festival Juried Exhibit at Gallery Uptown in Grand Haven, MI. The opening was this evening and now I am humbled to tell you that it won three awards. I thank the juror, Art Martin for his award, J. Morgan Ltd Jeweler for their award, and Great Lakes Dental Excellence for their award. Of course a special than you goes out to Gallery Uptown for sponsoring the annual competition. They have offered artists of West Michigan the opportunity to challenge their creative abilities for 20 years. Most of all, I thank the Lord for the gift of talent which he has given me, and all the patrons who have encouraged me along the way.

Started a new watercolor to be called "On Top of the World."
The dove is carved from wood and positioned on top of a sphere. Another gift from my daughter, sent to me several years ago. I've made many sketches of it, hoping to do a painting, but it just never felt quite right. This time it feels good.
